6 Market Square, Kirkby Lonsdale
6 Market Square is an iconic grade II listed building which forms the eastern boundary to the Square in Kirkby Lonsdale. The building was originally built as a bank but had been subject to a number of changes of use over the years. Upon our appointment the building accommodated offices to the ground floor with an independent apartment to the first floor. A flat roofed extension and dilapidated car porch had been added historically to the rear elevation. Many of the building’s original heritage characteristics had been removed or adapted and the building fabric was failing.
WDP were asked to convert the building into a single family home. The brief called for a full refurbishment and restoration along with extensions as necessary to create a fabulous family home.
Previous adaptations had allowed the hallway to be blocked off with masonry wall construction, which had cut off the internal vertical circulation. Upon opening up, it was evident that the original staircase had simply been built over, with just the bottom section of the original hand railing removed, fortunately the bottom steps were intact. The hallway and staircase were restored and brought back to their original glory to reinstate the circulation. The remaining rooms were all addressed to reinstate original features and openings rationalised to create better proportioned rooms with sensible access points. The property was extended to the rear in the form of a porch which accessed directly into the hallway and also provided circulation into a garden / dining room which links with the kitchen and to a new cloaks area, utility and plant room.
